Gonzo

There are many genres in film today, including road movies, romantic comedies, tragedies, noirs, and a most recent edition, movies about Hunter S. Thompson. There are just so many.

There are fictional accounts of Thompson’s life such as Bill Murray in 1980′s “Where the Buffalo Roam” or Johnny Depp in the film adaptation of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. And there is a slew of gonzo documentaries such as “Hunter S. Thompson: The Crazy Never Die”, “When I Die”, “Buy The Ticket, Take the Ride”, “Blasted!!! The Gonzo Patriots of Hunter S. Thompson”, and “Breakfast With Hunter”.

These films speak to the hunger of American audiences for Thompson’s outrageous personality and even more outrageous behavior. And even though there are so many films in the Thompson genre, (all of the above documentaries having been made in the 21st century) not one of them seems to repeat or bore. They show you that the Thompson character may not be so far from the real thing. So this is my I am not cringing at the soon to be released “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.”

This doc premeired at this years Sundance and may take the cake as the best Thompson bio to date. You can see from the trailer below, that not only to we get readings from Woody Creek regular and longtime Thompson friend Johnny Depp, but also interviews with Thompson’s enemies/provocateurs, George McGovern, Pat Buchanan, Jimmy Carter, and heck, I am sure if Nixon were around, he would have been interviewed too.
