Point Break Duece
The concept of a “Point Break” sequel is hardly newsworthy nor does it have anything to do with independent cinema. However, it could singlehandedly be the most important thing that has ever happened in the history of film. Because, for a kid like myself growing up a thousand miles away from the ocean and being exposed for the first time to surfing, skydiving, and mind blowing intense action all on the big screen, it had transformative powers. (Note: feel free to swap Gary Busey with “action” in the last sentence).
“Point Break” is the story of undercover FBI agent and all around coolest guy every Johney Utah (Keanu Reeves), who learns to surf under the reticent tutelage of the least annoying Lori Petty ever witnessed on film. Other than hitting waves, It is Utah’s mission to infilitrate a bank robbing suffer gang lead by Patrick Swayze, yes I said that right, a bank robbing surfer gang. But you know all of this already. You may also know that “Point Break” was not some campy cult classic, it was a critical and commercial success. And did I mention Anthony Kiedies makes a cameo.
So while it is up in the air as to whether or not Reaves or Swayze will be back for this sequel, I worry it has all the makings of a direct to dvd blister, not the cinematic masterpiece of the first installment. I just hope that this sequel will have the power to change lives like its predeccessor. And, at present, I fear very little when its production company endorses it as “The most extreme action stunts ever caught on camera.”
IESB.net has the full story of the “Point Break” sequelhere with the synopsis:
“When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there he’s recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like “The Ex-Presidents,” a bank robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.”
