I am Charlotte Simmons

Published by dwhitney under Indie Movies

Word got out today that Tom Wolf’s most recent novel, 2004’s “I am Charlotte Simmons” will be adapted to screen by writer John Watson and music video director Liz Friedlander. While it never bothers me when fine American literature is made into film, after all the best stories come from condensed 700 page manuscripts (like [...]

Watch the Tribeca trailers

Published by dwhitney under Film Festivals, Up and Coming

This is definitely not a complete list, but you can view 70 trailers from films showing at this years Tribeca Film Festival Here. It would take a while to watch them all, and it may be hard to get to excited unless you plan on seeing some of these at the festival, but it does [...]

ESPN EVERYTHING

ESPN started in 1979 with one cable television station. Today, the media conglomerate has over 15 television stations in addition to radio stations, websites, a large circulation magazine, a prime time awards show, and a chain of restaurants. The obviously glaring omission here is a film production company, and that is not to say [...]

Mr. Woodstock

Published by dwhitney under Indie Movies, Up and Coming

“By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers jet planes
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.”
This Crosby Stills Nash and Young song, some concert footage of Hendrix’s screeching “Star Spangled Banner”, and that great 1970 documentary “Woodstock” [...]

Towelhead

Published by dwhitney under Indie Movies

I pretty much assumed that any movie titled “Towelhead” would run into some controversy. But add a dash of pedophilia to the mix, and you have the producers of “Natural Born Killers”, “Kids”, and “Birth of a Nation” all turning their heads.
Towelhead is directed by Alan Ball, who I guess you could say already [...]

More Ebert

Published by dwhitney under Breaking News, Film Festivals

I have a little addition to my post yesterday about Roger Ebert and his annual Eberfest of unsung films. Today, which happens to be the festival’s opening day, Ebert has debuted a blog title Roger Eberts’ Journal, which can be found on his website.
His first post relays a story of an encounter with science fiction [...]

Ebertfest

Published by dwhitney under Film Festivals

It turns out Roger Ebert will not let a little thing like thyroid cancer stop his namesake engagment, Ebertfest. “The show must go on,” he recently told the Chicago Sun Times website. And while it is still unclear in what capacity Ebert will be attending, he will definitely be present at his 10th annual celebration [...]

Shakespeare is Cool Again

Published by dwhitney under Film Adaptations, Indie Movies

It only took four hundred years, but William Shakespeare is cool once again. Check out these indies honoring the Bard from Avon, as there is nothing more that needs be explained that will not be said during the trailer. The laughs here are plentiful, and thankfully they don’t have to come at the expense [...]

Did You Say Pittsburgh?

Published by dwhitney under Indie Movies

Being from a city founded on war time steel production, blood and guts style football, and an atmosphere which rotates between ten shades of gray, I as well as any Pittsburgher, will use each and every opportunity to flaunt whatever culture descends upon our great hometown. It just so happens that the city in question [...]
